Summery Report of 2011
Kan and Kern – winners of the airberlin german juniors 2011
Robin Kern & Constantin ChristOn Sunday the last matches of the 35th International German Junior Tennis Championships took place: the single finals for the junior girls and the junior boys. In front of the gratifying number of about 600 spectators watching the finals, both favourites came out on top.
Looking at the junior boys, this year’s Wimbledon quarter-finalist, Robin Kern, defied all competition. He didn’t lose one set in the tournament, and his competitor in the final, the unseeded Constantin Christ from Frankfurt, had to acknowledge Kern’s superiority. Despite many spectacular rallies Kern managed to turn the outcome mostly to his advantage and in the end won 6:2 and 6:2. Kern is one of the most promising young German talents. He is a very athletic player, amazingly agile considering his height, and he possesses two very dangerous strokes: his serve and his forehand. We expect to hear a lot of him in the near future.
All German final for the junior boys – Title-holder Victoria Kan reached the final
Doppelsieger 2011: Yaraslau SHYLA (BLR), Dennis NOVAK (AUT), Klara FABIKOVA (CZE) und Jessica REN (GBR)Vistoria Kan has taken an additional step towards defending her title. Even the Croatian Iva Mekovic wasn’t able to stop Victoria on her road to success. It was a hard-fought but eventually clear-cut 6:2, 6:3 victory. So far Kan hasn’t lost one set during the run of the tournament. More dramatic was the second semi-final where Donna Vekic (Croatia) triumphed against Anna Danlina ((Kasakhstan), winning the third set 6:4. The final will therefore be played by top-seeded Kan and second seeded Vekic.
There will be an all German final for the junior boys. Robin Kern managed to dominate his Czechian competitor Adam Pavlasek throughout the match and won without problems: 6:3 and 6:2. He will play the final against Constantin Christ (Frankfurt) who triumphed over his training partner, Julian Lenz (Bad Homburg), winning 6-4, 6-4. A slightly surprising victory, but one has to consider that Julian is suffering from a minor back injury. The favourite in the final is Robin Kern, but Constantin Christ because of his consistently solid playing and fighting stamina isn’t to be underestimated either.
We watched exciting doubles matches as well. Both finals were decided only in the match tie break. International German Champions 2011 are the junior girls Klara Fabikova( CZE) and Jessica Ren (GBR) and the junior boys Dennis Novak (AUT) and Yaroslau Shyla from Belarus.
Matches on Sunday will begin at 01.00 p.m. with the junior girls final, followed by the junior boys final.
Three junior German talents reached the semi-finals
Julian Lenz (GER)At the International German Junior Championships on the grounds of the LTTC “Rot-Weiss” at the Berlin Lake Hundekehle, German hopes focus on the junior boys. With Constantin Christ (Frankfurt), Julian Lenz (Bad Homburg) and the Wimbledon quarter finalist, Robin Kern (Nurnberg), three players managed to reach the semi-finals. Christ won against Esteve Lobato (Spain) 6:4 in the third set. But looking at Lenz’s match the margin was even narrower, winning 7:6 against Luke Bambridge (GBR) in the third set. Both matches provided top-class tennis for an enthusiastic audience. Less trouble had Kern who was able to beat Konstantin Gerlakh (Russia) without any apparent effort. Daniel Masur (Westfalia), on the other hand, was eliminated, but he put up a good fight until in the end his antagonist, Adam Pavlasek from Czechia managed to win the tie break in the third set. On Saturday the semi-finalists will therefore be Lenz against Christ and Kern against Pavlasek.
Looking at the junior girls this year’s tournament has been played without any German competition since Thursday. Today Victoria Kan managed to take one further step towards defending her title. She won against the Orangebowl winner Alexandra Kick (USA) in two sets. In the semi-finals she will meet the Croatian Iva Mekovic, who barely managed to triumph over the Czechian Klara Fabikova 6:4 in the third set. The second semi-finals match will be played/fought by Donna Vekic (Croatia, winner against Elizaveta Kulichkova from Russia) and Anna Danilina (Kasakhstan, winner against Valeria Patiuk from Israel).
Matches on Saturday will begin at 01.00 p.m. with the semi-finals singles. Afterwards the doubles finals will be held/played.
German juniors were successful
Alexandra Kiick (USA)At the International German Junior Championships the German junior boys were very successful in today’s matches. The tournament favourites Julian Lenz (Bad Homburg) and Robin Kern (Nurnberg) both had a walk-over and won easily in two sets. Constantin Christ (Frankfurt), on the other hand, had to fight hard before he finally triumphed over Herkko Pollanen with 6:2 in the third set. In an exclusively German duel Daniel Masur (Westfalia) won against Adrian Obert ((Oberweyer, Bavaria) by a clear margin.
It is a pity that all German junior girls were eliminated today. Katharina Lehnert (against Alexandra Kiick, USA), Majlena Petersen (against Valeria Patiuk, Israel), Tayisya Morderger (against Elizaveta Kulchkova, Russia) and Sonja Larsen (against Donna Vekic, Croatia) lost their matches more or less clear-cut. Next to Vekic, the title-holder Victoria Kan who reached the quarter finals with an easy victory, obviously still belongs to the circle of favourites. Her match against Alexandra Klick on Friday is eagerly anticipated.
Friday matches will begin at 01.00 p.m. with the quarter finals singles and the semi -finals doubles
Favourites at the airberlin german juniors up and coming
Yaroslav Shyla (BER)At the International German Junior Championships the favourites triumphed in most matches. Title-holder Victoria Kan (Russia) and the second seeded Donna Vekic (Croatia) won both their matches in two sets without any problems. There is good news about the German girls. Four of them reached the round of the last 16. Katharina Lehnert and Sonja Larsen (both training at the federal sports center of the German Tennis Association in Hannover), Majlena Petersen (Braunschweig) and Tayisya Morderger (Westfalia) managed to survive the second round of the main field.
The two Italians Matteo Donati and Luca Pancaldi, defeating both top-seeded players on Tuesday, couldn’t savour yesterday’s victory for long, They were both eliminated today, being defeated by Constantin Christ (Palmgarten Frankfurt) and Adrian Obert (Oberweiher). Apart from the German carriers of hope, Robin Kern (Nürnberg) and Julian Lenz (Bad Homburg), we should watch Yaroslav Shyla (Belarus) who so far has managed to play his way through the tournament without any problems and without losing one set.
Not unexpectedly, both remaining Berliners, Pascal Schubert and Julian Heikenfeld, were eliminated today. Still it was a success for both of them when they reached the second round.
The Thursday matches will begin at 01.00 p.m. with the round of sixteen in singles and the quarter finals in doubles.
