Large scale operation of the young tennis talents |
Tuesday saw a large scale operation of the complete number of the first round matches - singles and doubles - of the maindraw at the International German Junior Championships, held at the LTTC “Rot Weiss”: A total of 96 matches was held and all the 128 participants played.
There were no surprising outcomes with the junior boy players. All players, which were considered top class, including both top German players, could establish themselves and won their matches more or less without problems. Wimbledon champion Kevin Kravietz (No. 2) won his match against his US opponent Kurt Theis easily , scoring 6 – 3 in the third set. Alexandros Geurgoudas, as well, made short work of Robert Howe from Australia. Richard Becker, the No. 3, had some problems against Ricardo Belotti (Austria) only in the first set, the rest of the match went smoothly in his favour. Even some of the younger talents could score among this top field of players.

Wimbledon-Champion Kevin Kravietz arrived in Berlin |
|
Most of the 130 participants of the air berlin german juniors arrived in Berlin on Monday. Among them were the two German junior players, who attracted a lot of attention in Wimbledon last week. Most importantly the Wimbledon champion Kevin Kravietz, who, together with his French partner Herbert, won the doubles final in three exciting and dramatic sets, with the score 13 – 11 in the final set. Not only the title but also the participation at the legendary “champions dinner” with all the Wimbledon winners of this year and many winners of the previous years was his extraordinary reward. The Tournament Director Bernd Warneck himself picked up Kevin Kravietz as well as Alex Georgoudas personally, who unfortunately lost in the semi final, and escorted both of them to the official players’ hotel. |

Even Sabine Lisicki’s carrier started at the Junior Tournament at „Rot-Weiss“ |
With great interest Germany’s tennis fans watched the events on the “holy” lawn” in Wimbledon during the last eight days. Next to Tommy Haas, a young Berlin player has caused quite a stir: Sabine Lisicki, the first female German player after Steffi Graf, has reached the quarter finals in the most important tennis tournament of the world. In between was a long 13-year-period. She then lost against the No. 1 of the world, Dinara Safina, in three sets, but showed again, that she is on equal footing with the top players in the world. |

International German Junior Championships 2009 – back with the LTTC “Rot-Weiss” |
One is almost tempted to say that the German Internationals came “back to the roots”, bearing in mind that this statement would not be wholly, but only partly the truth. In any case, it is immensely gratifying to be able to state, that after 1978 und 1980 the tournament, this time as airberlin german juniors, will be held for the third time at the LTTC “Rot-Weiss” in Berlin. Let’s hope for a long succession of this tournament in Berlin in future. |
