Four rising German tennis stars in the semi-finals |
On Friday at the International German Championships chaotic weather conditions reigned. All prior planning was destroyed by a couple of occasionally very heavy rain showers. Nevertheless all scheduled matches were played eventually and the semifinalists could be determined in time.
The best junior talents from Germany are sensationally successful, considering the top line-up of this tournament. With the boy juniors three German players managed to qualify for the semi-finals: Kevin Krawietz (Wimbledon Champion/double), Alexandros Georgoudas (Australian Open finalist/single) and Richard Becker (Wimbledon quarter finalist/single). But they encountered a lot of problems, because of the repeatedly stopped matches and the general weather conditions. After a lost first set, Georgoudas beat the Finn Mike Continen, scoring 6-3 in the crucial third set. Krawietz gained a close victory against the Argentinean Renzo Olivio and Becker beat the Peruvian Duilio Beretta, scoring 6-1 and 7-6.
In the semi-finals we will therefore see the duel between Georgoudas and Becker, whereas Kravietz will meet Raymond Sarmiento from the USA.
Equally successful was the last remaining German girl junior, Anna-Lena Friedsam. The shooting-star of the last few weeks could not be stopped by the British girl Elisha Gabb and manged to score a decisive 6 – 1, 6 – 1. Her opponent in the semi-final is Natalija Kostic from Serbia. The second semi-final will be decided between Irina Khromacheva and Yulia Putinseva.
On Saturday, July 11th, the matches start at 1:00 pm.
Entry is free.

Wimbledon champion Krawietz reached the quarter finals |
At the International German Championships the last 16 contestants played their single matches on Thursday. One of the first players to qualify for the quarter finals, scheduled for Friday, was the German Wimbledon champion Kevin Krawietz. The player from Coburg, who is the No. 2 of this tournament, triumphed over Roberto Quiroz from Ecuador in two sets. Although he had to adapt to the red clay courts at the Berlin Lake Hundekehle very shortly after his sensational success on the Wimbledon lawn courts last Sunday, Krawietz presented himself very confidently and is considered to be the outstanding favourite of the tournament. Richard Becker (No. 3) from Bad Oeynhausen also reached the quarter finals, winning against the Chilean Alvaro Nazal, scoring 7 – 5 and 6 – 3. An equally good chance of reaching the quarter finals has Alex Georgoudas from Hannover, who at the moment is still playing a late match.

At the International German Championships the matches of the second round were held today, on Wednesday. 13 of the top 16 tournament players could move on into the third round, among them the last three remaining top German players. The No 1 player, Alexandros-Fernandos Georgoudas, really had to make an effort before he could beat his fellow countryman Florian Fallert in three hard sets. The No 3, Richard Becker, had to fight hard as well, before he won the match against Marvin Netuschil (both Germany). It went a little easier for the recent Wimbledon doubles champion, Kevin Krawietz, who defeated Thorsten Bertsch in two sets. |
