Wimbledon champion Krawietz reached the quarter finals
abgj2009_krawietzAt the International German Championships the last 16 contestants played their single matches on Thursday. One of the first players to qualify for the quarter finals, scheduled for Friday, was the German Wimbledon champion Kevin Krawietz. The player from Coburg, who is the No. 2 of this tournament, triumphed over Roberto Quiroz from Ecuador in two sets. Although he had to adapt to the red clay courts at the Berlin Lake Hundekehle very shortly after his sensational success on the Wimbledon lawn courts last Sunday, Krawietz presented himself very confidently and is considered to be the outstanding favourite of the tournament. Richard Becker (No. 3) from Bad Oeynhausen also reached the quarter finals, winning against the Chilean Alvaro Nazal, scoring 7 – 5 and 6 – 3. An equally good chance of reaching the quarter finals has Alex Georgoudas from Hannover, who at the moment is still playing a late match.
With the girl juniors only Anna-Lena Friedsam (No. 4) managed to secure her position among the best eight players. She beat her fellow countrywoman Caroline Wegner smoothly in two sets. Especially during the last few weeks Anna-Lena has improved her performance considerably. Thanks to her success in Berlin so far, she can already take part in the maindraw of the US Open.

Pretty surprising was Sina Haas’ defeat against the Ukrainian Sophia Kovalets. The No 3 from Mannheim had very few chances during that match. The Berlin LTTC ”Rot-Weiss” player, Dejana Raickovic, played a balanced match against the No 1 of the tournament, the Russian Irina Khromacheva. She played surprisingly well, but eventually she had to acknowledge her adversary’s superiority after three sets. Nevertheless being among the 16 best players of this top international tournament is a big success for the young Berliner.

On Friday, July 10th, the matches start at 1:00 pm.

Entry is free.
