Kan and Carballes are the International German Youth Champions
akt_11072010_002_kan Viktoria Kan (Russia) and Roberto Carballes Baena (Spain) hold the titles of the airberlin german juniors 2010. It was an outstanding day of the finals, not least because of the tropical heat of almost 40 °C, pushing the temperature up to more than 50°C on the Steffi-Graf-Stadium, where the players had to endure the blistering sun.

Both finals developed very differently. Viktoria Kan proved the more clever player in both sets, who always knew the answers to the powerful game of her adversary Annika Beck from Bonn. Even under pressure she regained her superior position by playing "balls to the moon", and at the same time managed to win a lot of points. At no point in the game was her safe success of 6 -- 2 and 6 -- 2 at risk. The young Russian, only 15 years old, is certainly a player, who will find her place in the women's world ranking in the near future.

What a difference to the final of the boy juniors! Here, the Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena fought for three hours against Joris de Loore from Belgia until he finally managed to come out on top. It was a great and highly competitive match, which was eventually decided by a very few points. At first de Loore played to advantage and won the first set 6 -2. In the well-balanced second set the Belgian had the chance of three matchballs, one after the other, but he couldn't use them to his advantage. Carballes managed to win the next five points, triumphed in the tie-break scoring 8 -- 6, and gained the lead in the third set with 5 -- 2. But again de Loore regained his true form, shortened the distance to 4 -- 5 and even had the chance to equalize the score twice. After that Carballes managed to win his first matchball, scoring 6 -- 4. During the award ceremony an enthusiastic audience thanked both players with a warm round of applause for an exciting and top-class final, played under extremely difficult conditions.

The airberlin german juniors again offered a whole week of high-class international junior tennis and should have gained a strong foothold in our capital by now.
